Volunteer for us

Alf, Frederique & Alex.JPG

Our volunteers are vital in helping us run the wide range of activities and services that we provide and fundraising for renovating our halls.  We value their time and commitment very much.

As a volunteer you'll be contributing to the community, meeting new people, gaining valuable work experience and adding skills to your CV.

We need help

  • in our Early Years Hub and Nursery

  • fundraising

  • with our 55+ and Men's social clubs

  • with the 4H Community Garden

  • in Reception

  • with social Media, graphic design and marketing

Or maybe you have skills and experience in other areas that you'd like to contribute.

Just get in touch with our Centre Manager ann@whittingtonpca.org.uk or call 0207 272 1847 if you would like to find out more about volunteering for us.  Find out about our volunteers below.

    Kathleen Bramble
    Reception & Admin support

Kathleen's calmness and organizational and IT skills are particularly appreciated when reception is busy - which is most of the time!

    55+ Social Club volunteer

    SHAJNA'S STORY

Shajna is originally from Bangladesh and has been living in Finsbury Park for over twenty years.  Up until 2015 she had mainly been caring for her children and husband but decided it was time, at last, to do something for herself.  She has been going to ESOL classes and volunteering at WPCA.  'I feel more relaxed and confident from volunteering here.  I got depressed from being a carer for so long, but now it's important I do something for myself.'

  • Burnt orange sunflower.JPG
    Tsghi Gebregziabher
    Social Club for 55+ Volunteer

Tsghi originally came from Eritrea and has lived in Hackney for over 15 years.  She is training in Health and Social Care at City & Islington College. She likes cooking, reading, walking and travelling. In her spare time she helps an elderly Eritrean friend with translating and shopping and a blind friend with his GP visits and reading letters.

  • Colleen Moyle.JPG
    Colleen Moyle
    4H Garden volunteer

Colleen moved to the area in 2014.  She likes the feeling of community and connection that volunteering in the garden gives her.  ‘I had a cup of mint tea with a friend recently, here, and I thought ‘I grew that!’ She’s never had her own garden and now she’s planting seeds and learning new things – experimenting and having a sense of what works and what doesn’t.  ‘Being in a learning situation and feeling supported is very important. Frederique, the garden volunteer coordinator is very supportive'.

  • Swain Profile Picture.jpg
    Stephen Swain Photography Volunteer

Stephen responded to a request for help to photograph our 55+ Social Club Christmas Lunch in 2013 and he's generously been donating his services ever since.
When he's not photographing weddings and functions he enjoys street photography for fun and watching films.

  • George Mayfield
    Marketing Volunteer

George used to cycle past WPCA on his way to work and noticed all the activities posted on our fence.   He wanted to feel more connected to the local community so got in touch. When he's not working as a Digital Marketer he likes doing parkour, cliff diving, DJing, photography and film making.

Loan, our fundraising staff member, met with our fantastic fundraising volunteer team weekly for seven months.  They helped run events, door knocked, picked up staging for John Hegley's show, collected donations from GAIL'S bakery , ran fundraising stalls, shook collection buckets and helped us exceed our 50:90 campaign target!

They said their experience of volunteering on the campaign was
'collaborative, challenging, rewarding'

and

'It was good to get to know new people.  I was pushed out of my comfort zone and dealt with fresh challenges.'

'I had a sense of achievement at reaching our target. It was great to feel more involved in the community. '

'I learnt new things.'

'Unexpected laughs.  It was enjoyable!'

'Being made redundant hit me very hard and was a horrible experience to go through.  I lost what little confidence I had and seeing how the world of work had changed over 18 years was very scary and overwhelming for me.  The support that I receive from everyone at the Centre is wonderful and knowing that I am helping a centre that provides so much to the community is very rewarding.'
